How did you learn about the transcription career?

Another applicant for home-based transcriptionist wrote an answer to my question, “How did you learn about the transcription career?”

She learned about the transcription career way back in 2005 when she was contemplating on a new field of endeavor.  She used to work as a researcher for a government entity and did this kind of job for over 20 years.  She decided to resign, partly because she wants to focus her attention on her growing daughter, and partly because she was burned out as a researcher after doing it for almost 22 years.

When she realized that her daughter was of pre-school age already, she started to think about other productive ways to spend her time.  Then a friend told her about medical transcription and she saw many ads about it.  So, she enrolled at a medical transcription school in Buendia, Makati called MTC Academy in July 2005 and finished the course in February the following year.

In March 2006, she landed a job at E-Scribir as a general transcriptionist, but due to unexpected domestic concerns, she was opted to resign after six months.

Fortunately in January 2008, a friend asked her to assist in home-based transcription work which is transcribing US-based news programs.  She is still doing this part-time job at present.

Transcription Training

When I decided to enroll in an MT course, I chose MTC Academy for the following reasons:
1. MTC Academy is TESDA certified.
2. It is, as far as I believe, the pioneer in MT education.
3. Convenient location in Buendia, Makati which is a jeepney ride from my work.

I tried as much as possible to fit my schedule at work as a warehouse expediter in Bizu with my training at MTC Academy. But then, I resigned from work a few weeks before I finished my MT course due to some personal reasons. I think I was not happy anymore working as a food technologist.

I learned a lot from my training at MTC Academy. Although, I heard a lot of complaints from other students, I just ignored it and made the most out of what they offer. I would like to commend also the lessons I’ve learned from my mentors. They both made the classroom sessions a more fun yet educational one.

The course lasted from November 2004 to March 2005. Then, what’s next is the on-the-job training.

Well, to really appreciate the career as an MT, an OJT needs to undergo an on-the-job training after the classroom and laboratory sessions. Luckily, after some time of job hunting and taking series of qualifying exams from various MT companies, Touch Asia gave me as well as two others of “The Wizards” a chance to work as an OJT.

I felt like working already as an MT. Well, part of it maybe because we received some allowance for our training, and also we worked with some live audio files.

Summing up, my overall training as medical transcriptionist both in MTC Academy and Touch Asia is truly a fruitful learning experience.

Touch Asia - Philippines

I was touched by Touch Asia!

After I finished my medical terminology lectures and voice file transcription training at MTC Academy, I then immediately looked for an MT company that will accommodate us for the on-the-job training. Luckily, I was able to pass the application to Touch Asia Contact Solutions.

I was able to be independent with my transcription training with them. The editors and MTs were all supportive. I was trying to ask for a possible vacant position after I finished the require number of ours but at that time, there was no hiring.
