Top of my list when visiting Palawan, the Philippines is to experience the world-renowned Puerto Princesa Underground River. I do not know what to expect, although I am hearing good news that it is worthy to do the tour. Various online reviews are telling it is a must-see place when in Palawan.

So, in May 2015, It was the time when I decided to visit Palawan.  I made a separate hotel booking in Sabang, Puerto Princesa primarily for convenience in visiting the Puerto Princesa Underground River. I also wanted to experience seeing the other beach side of Palawan called the Sabang beach. I was only basing this assumption that there are somehow more places to visit in Sabang Beach when I checked the Sabang in Google Maps.

I made the correct decision that I spent a night in Sabang. The travel from Puerto Princesa City Airport to Sabang is very tiring. The road has so much curves and slopes and at times some slight steep turns; maybe because of the mountainous terrain. It took us 3 hours to reach the hotel. Good thing, the hotel staff in Amos Digue Pension House was helpful in getting us a private van because we missed the last trip of the Lexus Shuttle Service (5 pm usually from the airport). The flight was delayed more than 1 hour and 45 minutes from Manila as expected from Cebu Pacific.

Reaching the hotel Amos Digue Pension House in Sabang, Puerto Princesa City, my daughter and I were tired. We immediately slept after a quick hot instant noodles for dinner. Good thing, there were still sari-sari stores open. I gave to the hotel staff the payment for the permit going to the Puerto Princesa Underground River as suggested because he will arrange that early morning.

I found out that it is preferable to get a hotel in Sabang when taking the Puerto Princesa Underground River tour because the hotels/inns/cottages here have allocation given by the municipal government for the permit. If you’re doing the tour your way, booking can be made a month before your planned tour. The other option is to ask your hotel anywhere in Palawan (mostly hotel near in Puerto Princesa City proper) to arrange the tour because most of them have counterpart hotels in Sabang.

When I outsourced my audio transcription jobs, a number of applicants inquired about my home-based job posting. At that time, I received numerous e-mails that most of them have experience working in a call center.

As for my home-based audio transcription job opening, there are few points that I notice why they (call center agents or CCAs) like to venture into this new career that is somehow similar in some aspects mainly being an outsourced jobs.

Here are some facts that make call center agents suitable to do audio transcription at home.

  1. Outstanding English language comprehension.
Call center agents believe they have the edge to do audio transcription work because of their excellent English proficiency. In fact, a transcriptionist is required to be exceptional in English comprehension.

  2. Speedy typing.
Most of them have the capability of typing more than 40 words per minute. This is an advantage being an audio transcriptionist.  You will be able to produce more files and consequently earn more. Of course, quality of work must be observed while working for quantity.

  3. Familiarity with voice files.
Most of the call center agents have experience typing voice mails so they know how to type while hearing the voice of the client.  This is an advantage for them because somehow they only use the keyboard to manipulate the audio player.  Majority of audio transcriptionists, particularly medical transcriptionists, are dependent on the foot pedal.

Indeed, the willingness to learn new skills by the call center agents is very impressive.  Even if they are tired doing work mostly at night; they still feel energetic to do home-based work.

This image from www.adam.com shows a graphic representation of TB mode of infection.

Tuberculosis, more commonly known to Filipinos as TB, is a lethal, infectious disease. Tuberculosis is caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis; an airborne type of bacteria which characteristically attacks the lungs, but may also affect and spread to other parts of the body. When someone with an active TB infection coughs, sneezes, shout, laugh or otherwise put out respiratory fluids through the air, which causes the bacteria to be suspended in the air. Most infections may not manifest any symptom at early stages and may be latent, but about one out of ten latent infection cases does eventually progresses to an active disease case.

Tuberculosis is ranked at number six leading cause of death in the Philippines, having 73 Filipinos dead each day.  It is essential to increase public’s awareness and proper knowledge to fight this deadly disease.

Here are most common misconceptions that Filipinos should be educated of:

1. TB is a disease only the poor and dirty can catch.

Anyone can acquire TB. People usually tend to unfairly and incorrectly associate this disease to people with low socioeconomic status and poor hygiene. Although there are certain risk factors for exposure, about anyone, whatever or whoever, can acquire TB. It is highly incorrect to judge a person to be a possible TB case, by basing on appearance and socioeconomic status.

2. My PPD test turned positive because of my BCG vaccination.

Having a history of BCG vaccination will cause a always cause a positive PPD test, is a one of the topmost misconception about TB, even to those who are in the medical field. This is untruthful.  BCG vaccines are used to protect people to certain types of TB forms and respectively it can cause false-positive result, but 10 years after the BCG vaccine has been administer, it has been scientifically proven this effect vanishes after 10 years.  Therefore it’s safe to say, that a positive result in an adult is not due to the BCG vaccine they got as a child.

3. Acquiring TB is easy.

Though it is true that TB is highly communicable, because of its easy transmission, it is essential to know that risk for transmission requires prolonged, continuous and close contact exposure to a TB case.  Understandably, those at utmost risk are household contacts or individuals who share the same crowded, small, poorly ventilated spaces with a TB case.  So therefore it can be concluded, that brief encounters, even if face to face, are unlikely to cause infection.

4. An individual with TB should separate their eating utensils from others.

This is highly incorrect. Tuberculosis bacteria typically attack the lungs, and spread its colonies there henceforth. It is not present in the mouth of a TB case as well as in the saliva this individual. Therefore, it is unnecessary to separate the eating utensils and other personal stuff of a known TB case.

These four misconceptions by Filipinos about TB are just a few among others. But with proper education and information by health professionals, for sure these TB misconceptions will be avoided.

Nicole was a freshman in college when she first learned about transcribing. The University of the Philippines hones the best students in the country. However, some of the people who go here are not as financially stable as some are and so part-time jobs are everywhere. A batch mate asked her if she wanted to earn money by transcribing meetings of a political group in the Philippines. At first, my friend just gave me one CD full of recorded meetings. When she got the hang out of it and she was transcribing the recordings faster, she gave her two more CD's. What she needs to do to get the job done was easy and so earning money out of it was a great thing.

On her last year as an undergraduate student, Nicole needed to earn extra money because she was saving up on a lot of things that she needed to graduate. She had sent her application as a private tutor but she estimated the money she would be earning would not be enough. She needed another part-time job. Then she remembered that she did some transcribing when she was still a freshman.

She had a hard time looking for a audio transcription job in the university so she decided to look for it online. Then she browsed one of of this blog's posts regarding transcription jobs. Aside from just being a job offer, the article made her realize that there were a lot of things to know in the audio transcription field like using a software that makes the transcribing easier using the foot pedals.

The contributor of this article was freshman in college who once applied to ad DOTCOM's job offer at the height of online jobs. She is a graduate by this time at the University of Philippines.

Fitness First Platinum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia had previously started over the past week last September 2013 its regular sessions of Aqua Zumba. Expatriates and locals alike enjoys the routine as seen in this video. I took the liberty of taking a video although hesitant as taking photos and videos in public places in Saudi Arabia is somehow controlled. I just made the video far enough but then I saw other members and staff taking photos and videos as well, so I think there should be no worries as the video shows fitness routines.  I hope they still continue this at present time.

If you want another twist in your workout experience, or if you are fond of dancing exercises but want to take it to the next level, then Aqua Zumba is definitely recommended. Aqua Zumba is a dancing exercise which needs you to immerse in the water, preferably below your chest level. This is challenging because the water’s density could restrict some range of movement so you have to exert more effort.

An amazing fact about Aqua Zumba aside from the thrill of dancing in the water is that it is considered as a low impact exercise. When you exercise out of the water, the impact of movement on your weight bearing joints are huge enough to make you susceptible for joint inflammation which could lead to osteoarthritis. Therefore, Aqua Zumba is ideal for everyone, most especially for older adults because water can lessen the impact on those joints.

Aqua Zumba is also good for the heart and lungs. According to research, water exercise lowers your heart rate by 3-15%. Not bad for people who are suffering from a fast heartbeat that could lead to some sort of cardiac problem. Aqua Zumba also increases your lung capacity because it is forced to ventilate against the hydrostatic pressure of the water. Therefore expect that you are going to breathe better after performing the workout.

Expect for changes in body composition and muscle strength when doing Aqua Zumba. Experts say that around 500 to 700 calories are being burned when doing water based work outs but according to research, you can expect changes in body composition after 8 weeks of working out. Same with muscle strength, you can expect your muscles to be more lean and stronger after 8 weeks.

Although the effects of Aqua Zumba are great, that doesn’t mean you have to overdo it. Remember the principle of wear and tear: when you overdo something, more risks are bound to happen than benefits. So keep a regular schedule of Aqua Zumba workout. You can start gradually from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Aqua Zumba is a good alternative although experts say that a balance of land base and water-based workout is more essential than working out on the water alone.  Therefore, don’t miss out the land base work out that is suitable for you and balance that with your Aqua Zumba.

These are the benefits that you can get when doing Aqua Zumba. So plan for this type of routine, bring your friends with you and enjoy dancing at the pool.

Aqua Zumba has been available some time at Fitness First Platinum, Localizer Mall, Thalia Street, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Audio Transcription is a form of data entry that involves listening to a recorded audio and/or a video file and then converting it into written form. It is usually done with a software specifically designed for this purpose. The person doing this kind of work is called an audio transcriptionist.

There are several types of transcription. Among them are medical transcription, legal transcription, corporate or business transcription, and general transcription. The first two requires specialized training and familiarization with their respective technical terminologies, thus making them relatively harder to get into than general transcription. The latter, on the other hand, may include phone conversations, focus group discussions, meetings, seminars, interviews, investigations, television transcripts, and other recordings.

Tools and Materials

Some of the materials needed by an audio transcriptionists are a good set of earphones or headset and a transcription foot pedal. Additionally, either working office based or home based, an up-to-date desktop or laptop is an advantage. Your keyboard should be suitable to your needs as well as your mouse to prevent strain to your hands. our working table and chair should be appropriately positioned based on comfort.

Qualities of an Audio Transcriptionist

Given these descriptions of audio transcription, one may deduce that the work of a transcriptionist is indeed very important. It is something that must not be taken lightly, as the written output of his work will be used for reference of employees, researchers, businesses, and other end-users. An audio transcriptionist must therefore possess a high level of comprehension, good hearing acuity, and excellent English grammar, especially since there are times when the audio/video file may not be very clear. Ability to be proficient in using various internet-based resources is necessary. Knowledge in various computer applications is also an advantage.

Audio transcription is an emerging field of expertise that every types of professional have been attracted. A nurse can work as medical transcriptionists while a social science graduate can become a legal transcriptionists or podcast transcriptionist. Any career inclined with excellent English comprehension has the advantage to work as academic or business transcriptionist.

Medical transcription is somehow a necessity among nursing graduates.  Since the nurses work directly with doctors, they must be equipped how to become a medical transcriptionist.  So most nursing school nowadays include medical transcription in their curriculum.  The work of a medical transcriptionist does not only include audio transcription in a hospital setup.  Other tasks are being assigned to them and especially for nurses who know how to work as medical transcriptionist, it will be an added advantage.

I received an email from a registered nurse who currently practicing his profession in one of the hospitals in the southern Philippines.  His present level in medical transcription is as a beginner, but he has experience in medical transcription during his college days for which he got his Certificate of Medical Transcription.

The factors that prompted him to pursue a career in medical transcription are his nursing degree and his medical transcription elective in college.  He actually considers this as his stepping stone.  Since he decided to pursue this career, he would do anything just to have this job.

He prefers to work at home as medical transcriptionist given the luxury to be comfortable and relaxed.

Because medical transcription is most appealing to his interest, he states that the most important characteristic or quality to become an effective and productive medical transcriptionist is the listening skill having enough resources and at the same time being a patient individual.

To become a seasoned medical transcriptionist in the future, he believes that whatever you do, do it in the best way you can.

Major online news agencies reports today the ever anticipated banning of Viber by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In a report released by Reuters, the  Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) in the Kingdom has posted in their website the following statement.

"The Viber application has been suspended ... and the (regulator) affirms it will take appropriate action against any other applications or services if they fail to comply with regulatory requirements and rules in force in the Kingdom."

As an expatriate working in Saudi Arabia, using Viber to connect with my family in the Philippines is very convenient. Since I have reliable Mobily Internet at home in Riyadh, and my family has so far a fair SmartBro connection in the Philippines; web-based communication is very easy.

It was not long time ago that I started to use Viber to have a free call to my family. But now, no more Viber to enjoy. You can start looking for other alternative VoIP app but even Skype is being considered to get banned in Saudi Arabia.

Reasons of Banning Viber and other Instant Messaging and VoIP app in Saudi Arabia

Here are some unconfirmed reasons because there still no definite statement coming from the government agency.

  • Viber does not meet any regulations and laws existing in Saudi Arabia.
  • Telecom companies such as Mobily, STC and Zain are deprived from income.

Other Countries, Regions and Providers also have also banned Viber as per Viber website

  • Argentina
  • Myanmar
  • Vodafone
  • Ireland
  • Hungary
  • United Kingdom
  • Netherlands
  • O2 in UK
  • T-Mobile in UK
  • Lebanon
  • UAE
  • Belize
Below are the comments I received when I initially posted this article in 2013.

Maybe the Saudi government is just very cautious. Viber can be used by terrorists for communication purposes.

It’s true that telecoms lose a lot due to Viber. A good chunk of income for overseas calls is lost. But these calls should not be made too expensive. After all, telecoms still get huge profits for mobile internet connections.

So sad for our overseas workers in the middle east, communication via internet (other is good income ðŸ™‚ ) is our lifeblood to keep us going overseas despite away from our beloved family … now if this is suppressed, we’re in icu psychologically, i experienced it when i’m in abu dhabi few years back. We need to find a way other than viber and skype. Try Google+ Hangout. Thanks for the share bro.

That is just so sad and disappointing ðŸ˜¦ my sister-in-law lives in KSA with her husband and viber has been really useful as a means of communication ðŸ˜¦ Still, if there were tighter controls by the telcos here, I bet they would also want to have this app blocked because they lose some money there.

When I was in Saudi Arabia in 2013, I encountered a call and text scam telling me that I won SAR200,000.  This amount of money is huge.  The scam will go like this.

A person, usually unable to speak English, contacts you through your mobile number, telling you won 200,000 Saudi Riyals.  He will say that you won by a raffle made by STC or Mobily.  He will ask you to confirm your mobile number by reading the SMS he will send.  The message will be named after STC or Mobily, but of course it can be very suspicious. The SMS also states a password.

"Please do not disclose your temporary password to anyone, even to an STC representative. Your temporary password is 365462."

But then, he will ask you about the password.

Checking the Internet for similar scam, you will know there are similar incidents of scam activity involving a fraudulent calls. When proceeded, here are some other things that will happen.

  • The scammer will ask you to buy a prepaid card load and you will give them the PIN code as a requirement to process your price.
  • The fraudulent price will be processed through bank transfer like in Al Rajhi Bank.
  • To get your attention also, the scam person also will tell you that your STC sim serial number 899660 is in the list of the lucky draw. If you will check your SIM card, it actually starts with this number.
  • The incoming call number that will appear on your phone seems legitimate like in my case it was 0535491083.
  • All similar stories can be searched on the Internet with the same price of "You won 200,000 SAR".

I never knew that this kind of fraudulent activity may happen in Saudi Arabia wherein there is strict registration of mobile SIM cards. Mobile numbers in Saudi Arabia is required to register under your name and Iqama or national ID. Good thing, I sensed it was suspicious when the scam caller asked me to disclose what I received from SMS message, wherein it contradicts what it was stated.

When I initially posted this story online, I received a lot of comments.  Please see below:-

I also received a call. After two days I report to STC customer care, Then they give a number 900, and told me to send message “9988” to the number 900. Then I received a message that, someone already taken two sim from my iqama without my permission and without getting my iqama copy. Then, I become very much tensed. Please be very carefull. I think, they are misusing the “mySTC” android application or mySTC website and send a temporary password to our mobile. If we tell the password, they can know everything about which numbers we usually call, our stc sim pin number, available balance and lot of. And after they will tell, they are from STC, and call for verification purpose and ask for your iqama number. If we tell our iqama ID, They got every thing. Then after they take Sim from our iqama ID. I don’t know, how they take SIM without getting original or copy of the iqama.

Today (08-Dec-2015) my friend received same type of call from a person, telling that he is calling from Zain (+966597329513). And told to go to Al Rajhi bank or Enjaz for collecting winning amount of SAR 200,000.00. When my friend delayed to disclose his Iqama id and his name, the person disconnected the call. He is talking in Urdu. He was showing urgency throughout the call.

Yesterday I received a call from this number 0503278107 stating that he is from stc costumer service. And he said I’ve won from a raffle draw. Which I insisted that I didn’t join any raffle draw. Then he started mentioning my first six degit serial number of my card which was 899660, which is actually all stc numbers have the same first 6 digit pin. After that he said he well call me again for further instructions.

Beware for this kind of SCAM!!! I received a certain call from an Indian guy pretending a STC employee today, the same scam for SR 200,000 winning e-voucher raffle. First, he gave me a password to open my STC account after that he knew everything about my records including my name, how much the latest load amount & balance i have. He knows also the serial # of my simcard. Then suddenly he ask me to buy SR 100 load voucher as a requirements to claim my price in Al Rajhi Bank. But take note, he want me to send first the new SR 100 voucher load to get the serial number to give me the reference of winning number. I told this crazy guy that I don’t have enough money to buy SR 100 voucher, then he told me to cancel my price if I don’t buy the SR 100 immediately then I answer, F_ _K YOU!!! after that he close the line of our phone conversation. This kind of scam is really a bloody fucking shit. Don’t ever entertain this kind of call.

I also experienced this few years ago. A Pakistani called me and said that my sim number 899660 has appeared in random lottery and I have won SAR 200,000 from STC. He will tell you to check your sim number and call him. For a minute I actually believed him because he was so convincing. They will ask you Iqama id and bank account number (which I didn’t give). Then he was told me not to disconnect the call and go to shop, purchase 50 cards of 100 riyals and give him the pin numbers in order for him to reveal the Al Rajhi cheque no. Thats where it clicked for me and I realized that he was a scam. I immediately ended the call. He kept calling me back and I blocked his no.

Thanks to Allah for controling my greed and I didn’t lose any money (except for a few riyals on calling him back.)

Please people be careful and don’t let these bast@rd$ troll you. I was saved but many innocent people ended up losing their hard earned money to these rasc@ls.

I just had a call a while ago from a mobily number 0545709469. He sounds like a Pakistani who doesn’t speak English fluently. At first he was trying to make a conversation with me but later told me his manager who speaks English will talk to me. But he told me to check first if I have 89966 at the back of my simcard to make sure that I am the exact person who won the SR200,000. I did what he asked me to do. And yes, there is 89966 in it which I learned a while ago that everybody has it. Anyway, to cut the story short, I know about mobile scams so after he calls again and asked me to call him back (probably he doesn’t have enough load to finish the conversation) I told him “Oh, I am so happy I won 200,000. Ok, I will call you back next year!”. But it seems he doesn’t understand. After a while that I am not making a call, he calls me back. I answered it but I keep on saying “Oh I won I won” repeatedly. Then he realized that I am just prolonging the conversation to exhaust his load. So he hang up. It sounds funny but Mobily shall act on this matter. There maybe too many people who were victimized.

Hi, today i received similar call while in the middle of the work using this number 0571434282. he sent me a m-code asking me about the verification code i received in the massage. unfortunately i gave it to him since i was not concentrating and not expecting something like this to happen to me. but after that i realized that there is something suspicious about him, especially after i told him i will call him again and he replied “but you don’t have enough credit to call”!!!. that was his first mistake…(now he received my attention!!!). well, i called him back later to know his plan and how he is going to get on me, and more important how much did he know about me. but before calling i did some research. i realized the following:
1- he was planning to let me buy 1200 STC voucher and either give him the vouchers no (which is highly unlikely” or to recharge my mobile with it.

2- he will ask me for my Iqama No. to start transferring the money as he claims!!!.
3- he will use “Mobily app” using the verification code i gave him+the iqama no to transfer the credit to his numbers and …vanish!!!

but those were his steps……….so be careful

since i refused to give him my personal information he can do NOTHING AT ALL. So don’t give your personal information to any anonymous.

stay awake and be safe

Asking me to buy recharge card worth 650 riyal and send the numbers to him. So why will I do that. Just Block his number and Forget everything. Here is his number.+966571375606
